A pavement sign is a simple product that fails in predictable ways. Decide these four things and it will outlive several sets of graphics.

Frame type is decided by wind and by how often the message changes

On a sheltered pavement, a folded A-frame is cheapest and perfectly adequate. On an exposed frontage, a corner site or a seafront, it will blow over, and the answer is a water-base spring sign that rocks and rights itself.

If the message changes daily, use a chalkboard. If it changes weekly, use a snap frame. If it changes twice a year, a plain printed panel is fine and cheaper than both.

The hinge is what actually wears out

This is the specification nobody asks about and the one that decides the sign’s life. A moulded plastic hinge folded twice a day cracks within a winter; a steel pin hinge outlives the frame.

Look at it before you buy. If a supplier cannot tell you what the hinge is made of, that is the answer.

Size is decided by your council, not by you

Most authorities licence pavement signs and cap the area they may occupy, sometimes with a minimum clear footway width as well. A1 is standard for a shopfront; A2 is what a narrow pavement or a strict licence usually allows.

Check first. Ordering the bigger board and hoping is the most common and most expensive mistake in this category.

Then, and only then, the graphics

A pavement sign is read at walking pace from a few metres by somebody who was not looking for it. That means far fewer words and far larger type than feels right on screen.

Print both faces. A single-sided board is invisible to everybody approaching from the other direction, which is usually half your footfall.

Use synthetic poster material outdoors rather than paper — paper wicks water from its cut edges and is unreadable within a week or two even behind a cover.

What to send when you ask for a quote

Frame type, size (or your licence conditions), how exposed the frontage is, how often the message changes, and artwork. That is enough for a real quote and a mockup the same day.

If you already own a frame and just need panels, send the visible panel size and the overall panel size — they are different, and the second is what gets cut.
